Afghanistan was already the second-worst country for Christians to live. With the Taliban’s take-over, the small but growing community of Christian converts is being hunted down.

World Magazine reports that a house church leader of a network of over 500 members received a letter from Taliban militants threatening, “We know where you are and what you are doing.”

Some church leaders had decided to change their religious affiliation on their national identity cards. They wanted their children to be able to publicly identify as Christians.  The Taliban may have gotten these government records to track them down.

Taliban members took a 14-year old daughter from one family.

Many Christians are in hiding. They stay connected online but they cannot meet. About 200 Christians crossed land borders to Pakistan and Iran this week.

Other news report that the Taliban is going house to house asking whether any Christians live in the community.

SAT-7, a Christian broadcaster to the Middle East and North Africa, says the Taliban is demanding people’s phones and if they find downloaded Bibles, they will kill the person.

Our hearts are breaking for these brave Christians. They need miracles.

Afghan Christian leaders ask us to pray for:

  • Physical protection and provision. For safety from harm, food and finances (the banks and ATMs are empty), and for visas.
  • Spiritual strength. “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,” Colossians 1:13
  • God to make Himself known. “Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men.” II Thessalonians 3:1-2.
