Kenya (International Christian Concern) –Three convicted terrorists, one of whom took part in the Garissa University attack that killed 148 people in 2015, were recaptured on Thursday after they escaped from a maximum security prison in Nairobi, the director of criminal investigations said.
“The three men were arrested as they tried to make their way to Somalia and were now being brought back to the Kenyan capital,” the Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti, told Reuters.
According to Reuters, the escapees included Mohamed Ali Abikar, sentenced to 41 years after taking part in the gruesome Garissa University terror attack in 2015 that left 146 students and two night guards dead. It was one of the deadliest attacks on Kenyan soil since the 1998 bombing of the United States Embassy in Nairobi.
During the attack, Somali-based al-Shabaab militants went into a shooting spree, separating Christians from Muslims and arranging Christian students outside in a line to execute them.
The two other escapees from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison included Joseph Juma Odhiambo, who was “jailed for trying to join Somali militant Islamist group al Shabaab in 2019,” and Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga, “arrested for his participation in a foiled 2012 attack on parliament,” wrote Reuters.
The three jihadists were captured after “looking disheveled” while seeking directions to the Boni Forest near the Somali border, reported the Daily Nation.
On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta fired the country’s prisons boss Wycliffe Ogallo, Kenyatta’s office said in a statement.
In addition, Reuters reported that “eight people who worked at the prison were arraigned on Tuesday over their role in the escape, according to a document from the Director of Public Prosecutions seen by Reuters.”
