“The Taliban are going door-to-door, searching for us, and if they find us, they kill believers on the spot.”
These words come from Guishan*, a believer inside Afghanistan. Someone who’s living in the country and seeing firsthand everything take place since the Taliban took control last August.
Guishan recently shared with us what’s happening to believers like her and her family right now—her emotion brings us up close to the suffering our family in Afghanistan is enduring.
Watching Guishan lift her hands and share her heart and prayers reminds me of scenes from the New Testament as Christians lived under severe persecution, hiding and secretly meeting together in the darkness of the catacombs.
“We can only meet our pastor in the dead of night, so no one can identify him or us,” Guishan says.
Each time I watch Guishan talk, the heartbreaking reality of her situation hits: She and her family could actually be killed for their faith at any given moment. Just one knock on her door.
But like so many Jesus followers in the New Testament, Guishan is still walking with Christ in the face of persecution—living out her faith and staying to build the secret church in Afghanistan.
Please take three minutes today to listen to Guishan … your sister. And then please pray James’ message to persecuted believers for your Afghan family:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (James 1:2-4).
