India (International Christian Concern) – Last week during a session of the United Nations, India called on Pakistan to stop its discriminatory practices against religious minorities.

While India’s calls for ending the persecution are welcomed, perhaps it is a good time to quote a verse from Matthew Chapter 7. “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye…”

India is on the same track as Pakistan in terms of persecuting religious minorities. Since Prime Minister Modi took power in 2014, cases of persecution against Christians and other religious minorities have increased dramatically. Pakistan certainly is not the poster child of religious harmony. Still, regardless of what India might say publicly, the situation for religious minorities in India is growing worse.

Several states across India have passed anti-conversion laws which restrict the ability of people to change their religion from Hinduism to Christianity or another faith. The laws embolden vigilantism for radical Hindu nationalists who commit violence against religious minorities. Local law enforcement in these states will support the attackers and even arrest the victims.

“India’s religious freedom is in complete decline,” said Matias Perttula, Director of Advocacy at International Christian Concern, “No matter what Modi and his administration may claim publicly, persecution is on the rise in India and people are suffering greatly. The international community must publicly condemn the persecution and implement international pressure against India for these egregious human rights violations.”

HOW TO PRAY: Please pray for the better treatment of religious minorities in Pakistan. Please also pray for India to see the plank in its eye as they hypocritically treat religious minorities poorly. Pray for the abolishment of anti-conversion laws, and pray for Indian Christians who continue to be attacked for their faith in Christ.
