Reflect on this verse as we pray for Pakistan today, asking for wisdom and peace to reign.
On 16 August, hundreds of people stormed a Christian colony in Jaranwala, a city near Faisalabad, Punjab province. The mob ransacked churches and their adjoining buildings, causing fear and panic in the local area. Hundreds of Christian residents fled their homes for fear of further attacks, as did those of neighbouring Christian villages.
The situation escalated as more churches were vandalised and set on fire, while houses were looted and personal possessions stolen.
It’s believed that the mobs were stirred up by allegations of blasphemy against two Christians, which were broadcast over mosque loudspeakers. Videos show the crowds attacking the colony, demanding to execute the two men themselves – essentially taking the law into their own hands.
Pakistan’s notorious blasphemy laws affect people of all beliefs. Yet cases against religious minorities routinely lead to violence against the wider community.
Please pray:
- For peace in Jaranwala, with no more violence and fear.
- That those who have fled will be able to safely return home, and that God would provide for all their needs.
- That the Pakistani government would do more to increase security in the area and to support those who have fled.
- That those inciting violence and carrying it out would be held accountable – sending a clear message that mob justice does not prevail.
