Afghanistan (MNN) — Four men were publicly executed in Afghanistan earlier this month, as ordered by the Supreme Court of that country. Nehemiah with FMI says interpretation of Islamic law paints the death of these men, accused of murder and robbery, as a carrying out of justice. Seen from another light:
“They have sparked global concern and been condemned over the harsh and non-transparent judicial practices,” he says.
Public execution, which had nearly vanished during the previous government, has seen a resurgence under Taliban rule.
“Of course human rights organizations are warning that such activities undermine the rule of law and instill fear rather than true justice,” Nehemiah says.
He points out that the incident serves as a grim reminder of the reality many Afghans face, living under a regime that uses fear and public punishment to assert control. It also rages urgent questions for the international community about how to engage with Taliban rulers while standing up for human dignity and justice. Yet, Nehemiah says there are untold stories in Afghanistan:
“Stories of courage, of silent faith, and of unwavering commitment [to] Christ.”
FMI partners walk a dangerous path, living under constant threat of extremist attacks, social rejection, government surveillance, or false accusations of blasphemy.
“And yet they press on steadfast and full of faith,” says Nehemiah.
Partners remain focused on Scripture distribution in the form of Keys for Kids storytellers despite immense pressure not to sow Christian seeds. Please pray for this effort and for the people of Afghanistan.
“We lift our eyes from the darkness of recent events,” Nehemiah says. “We invite you to lift up your voices in prayer and ask God to shield FMI partners and local believers – Christians in Afghanistan – from violence, imprisonment, and unjust accusations.”
Pray that the Keys for Kids devotionals would nurture faith in the hearts of children and families living in fear. Pray for financial needs to be met for this effort. Pray also for the Taliban, as one local partner requested, “that they would discover the light of hope in their lives.”
