Iran (International Christian Concern) – Preparations for another wave of COVID-19 victims appears to be underway in Iran as the Judiciary announces that 100,000 prisoners would have their furloughs extended until at least April 16th. The Judiciary had granted a temporary leave to several prisoners in an effort to contain the virus’ spread in prisons.

However, the Judiciary remains firm in their position regarding security prisoners. During the first wave of prison furloughs, the Judiciary clarified that security prisoners serving more than a 5 year sentence would not qualify for temporary release. During the latest announcement about the furlough extension, Iran’s Deputy Judiciary Chief said that it would not include security prisoners.

Security prisoners is a coded term used by Iranian officials to describe political prisoners, including prisoners of conscience. Two Christians reported that their jail sentences were cancelled after being released on furlough. However, most Christians serve a jail sentence of at least 5 years. As Iran wrestles with the COVID-19 virus, their exclusion of prisoners of conscience shows their disregard for the welfare of those who dissent from the regime, either politically or religiously. Iran is an officially Islamic country and makes every attempt to keep the Church out of sight from the rest of society.

HOW TO PRAY: Pray for the release of those who are wrongfully imprisoned in Iran. Praise God for persecuted Christians affected by the furloughs. Pray for the Gospel to spread throughout Iran.
