(ChinaAid—Jan. 08, 2021) Pastor John Cao, serving a seven-year-sentence in a prison in Kunming, the capital and largest city in Yunnan Province, writes poetry to encourage himself and others. ChinaAid prayerfully plans to include the following poem in Pastor Cao's forthcoming book.
The Mission
Wolves and tigers roar on cliffs,
where Wa mountain people
live in bushes and on perilous peaks.
God called Chinese missionaries
to change the old situation.
Wa children wave
as they
embark on a new journey.
Satan smirks in front of the LORD
until God charges him.
Job enjoys the Spirit
in front of God’s judgment seat.
My wish for the rest of my life?
That villages can remain,
and that faithful stewards
can be buried there.
Missing the Mountain Kids
As the bottomless black hole
swallows freedom,
I worry for the children, not myself.
Sporadic good news arrives.
Each school operates well.
The Smuggling
Human traffickers cross borders and break laws.
Day and night,
they smuggle Wa people
to make money from their misery.
As they abuse power, arbitrariness emerges.
Authorities involve righteous people
with no sense of shame.
The Climb
Led by the Spirit,
I climbed the Wa mountains,
for four years.
Never once did I anticipate,
that my own country
would imprison me for seven.
The question fills my mind,
Was the work worth it?
As I count all the lost sheep
who have returned,
God rewards my ambition.
The Lord’s Calling
The Lord calls disciples:
"Go to the ends of the earth,
Put on armor,
and leave your hometowns—
while it is still day."
In Wa State, so far away,
mountain people hunger and thirst
to be with God.
The Lord initially used me
to deliver spiritual food.
Now, He calls you
to continue...
where wolves and tigers roar on cliffs.

###
Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains
be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake
with its swelling.
Selah
