He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. (Isaiah 40:29)
Today we’re praying for the strength and health of Loreto Hernández García, an independent religious leader in Cuba.
Earlier this month, Loreto was forced to return to prison after State Security ordered his removal from hospital, where he was receiving treatment.
We are extremely concerned for Loreto’s wellbeing, as he suffers from heart disease, diabetes and several other health conditions. On top of this, he has been humiliated and severely beaten while in prison – on one occasion being thrown down a flight of stairs by a guard, who also ridiculed his religious beliefs.
Ask God to strengthen and protect Loreto today.
A wider crackdown
Loreto is serving a seven-year sentence for taking part in the peaceful protests of 11 July 2021 – much like Pastor Lorenzo Rosales Fajardo, whom many of you have been praying for.
Loreto was charged with disrespect and public disorder, but there are facts that show he was targeted for being the founder and vice-president of an independent religious group, the Association of Free Yorubas, which was directly created to defend their religious beliefs.
The group has a long history of being targeted by the authorities, and three other members are also in prison in connection with the 11 July protests. One of them is Loreto’s wife, Donaida Perez Pasairo, who was handed an eight-year sentence.
It's clear that these arrests can be linked to the repression of independent religious groups in Cuba, and we must keep praying for freedom and justice.
In summary, please pray:
- For the strength and protection of Loreto Hernández García, and that he will be granted the medical treatment he needs.
- For the release of all those who were detained in connection with 11 July, including Loreto Hernández García, his wife and the other members of the Association of Free Yorubas.
- That Cuban State Security will cease all targeting of independent religious groups, instead working towards a future where every citizen is free to believe.
